‘Career Stretch’ & Readiness: Does It Differ From a Gender Lens?

Stretch opportunities – those meaty assignments requiring expertise outside one’s regular duties – are all the rage right now. Companies like them because they provide employees with challenges and new skills, while acting as a trial run of an employee’s competence. Employees like stretch assignments because they signify a temporary opportunity to show their stuff, get exposure to new groups and leaders, and to lean in to an area of interest or passion.

But what factors go into a professional’s decision to raise their hand for a stretch role or assignment? What makes them shrink away?

This week Be Leaderly’s Selena Rezvani served as a guest on Coffee Break with Game-Changers Radio, Presented by SAP. Together with host Bonnie Graham and panelists Robert F. Solomon Jr., Director of Talent Development with the Network of Executive Women (NEW) and Shuchi Sharma, Global Vice President and Leader of Gender Intelligence at SAP, the group dug into the many factors that make us stretch and challenge ourselves.
