Leaderly Quote: Building a strong team
By Jo Miller
A 2015 poll by Monster.com revealed an ugly truth about the extent to which the American workforce feels undervalued and underappreciated.
• Almost 50% of workers reported never feeling appreciated at all at work.
• 90% of those polled said that they felt only occasionally appreciated.
Do I even need to spell out what the consequences are? An employee who isn’t feeling especially appreciated or valued probably won’t show up to work ready to give their best performance (or encourage their teammates to give their best, either.) Conversely, companies with “recognition-rich” cultures enjoy numerous benefits such as high employee engagement, low turnover, and better customer service.
Building a strong team
If turning around an unappreciative team culture seems like a daunting task, consider this: Gratitude can be contagious. University of Melbourne researcher Lea Waters discovered that it can be as simple as one person expressing appreciation. When others reciprocate, it can create a broader ripple effect, amplifying appreciation across an organization.
So start small, and recognize someone today. Building a culture of gratitude is the most underrated way to build a strong team.
