Leaderly Quote: Let’s make sure we’re audacious enough to not leave anything on the table.
By Jo Miller
Mellody Hobson is amazing. She’s the president of Ariel Investments and chairman of the board of trustees for Ariel Investment Trust, as well as serving on the boards of DreamWorks, Estée Lauder and Starbucks.
But it’s in watching Hobson’s TED talk, Color Blind or Color Brave that you get a sense of the truly remarkable leader that she is. If you care about how racial discrimination and bias impact our everyday decisions in life and in business, you simply must watch:
In her speech to Starbucks’ shareholders meeting (which I highly recommend reading in it’s entirety) Hobson said, “The idea of being the ‘land of the free and the home of the brave’ is woven into the fabric of America, because throughout history, as a people, we have never shrunk from the challenges we face. We show courage. We take action.”
“So let’s be bold. Let’s make sure we’re audacious enough to not leave anything on the table. Let’s make sure we’re daring enough to not leave anyone out. And let’s make sure that we’re not being color blind; but being color brave enough to ensure every child believes their future matters and their dreams are possible.”
