Leadership Strengths: A 10-Minute Tip
By Jo Miller
Need a quick burst of leadership inspiration today?
I recently tested out this new exercise with 65 participants in a couple of my group coaching programs. Not everyone completed the assignment, but those that did said it gave them a much-appreciated shot of focus and inspiration. It won’t take more than ten minutes, and you’ll get a renewed sense of your unique leadership strengths.
Your Leadership Strengths
Step 1: Read my article, 100 Qualities of a Leader.
Step 2: Select the top 10 that best represent how you’d like to lead this week.
Step 3: Narrow the list down to the top three qualities that best represent the leadership strengths you’d most like to own and be known for.
You can achieve this by combining together areas that are similar, like “Sees the big picture” and “Sets the vision.”
As you do this step, try to focus on your strengths and innate leadership style, rather than having a list of ten areas that are weaknesses. Leading from your strengths takes a whole lot less energy than twisting yourself into a pretzel, trying to become someone that’s not really you.
Step 4: Write them on a post-it note and stick it somewhere where you’ll see it as a reminder. Look out for opportunities to practice them this week. If it helps, write up an action plan.
Bonus step: Show the list of 100 qualities to a handful of people who know you well, such as a trusted colleague, mentor or manager. Ask them to identify your top three qualities and share them with you.
